How do We Decolonialise Global Health?
Date
Wednesday, November 18th 09:30 - 10:30 (Swiss time)
Presentation
The editor-in-chief of The Lancet recently wrote “Any western medical institution more than a century old and which claims to stand for peace and justice has to confront a painful truth—that its success was built on the savage legacy of colonialism.” This uncomfortable reality will resonate with many conference attendees, and 2020 has been filled with commitments from global health organisations to do more to address colonial and racist practices. However, commitments now need to be followed by reforms. A first step is to acknowledge that there will be winners and losers as we dismantle deep-rooted systems that advantage western individuals and organisations. In this session we go to the heart of the question of how we decolonise global health, asking leaders from a range of global health organisations to identify the key reforms needed and the barriers that we do not talk about enough. Using a novel approach to shift power dynamics, we will source questions from around the world, giving marginalised voices a greater opportunity to shape the conversation.
